Scarlett Johansson can now add director to her list of failed career attempts. The actress, who released a critically panned album about a year ago, has apparently bombed her first attempt at directing as well.
The wandering actress’ latest project involved directing a segment for a film called New York, I Love You, which was to feature a series of love stories, shot by a number of directors, including Natalie Portman and Brett Ratner.
Scarjo’s segment, starring Kevin Bacon, turned out to be so bad that it had to be cut from film’s final edit. Emmanuel Benbihy, the film’s producer admitted to having had doubts about the script, but told reporters that he nevertheless decided to let her go through with shooting the segment. He added that he and Scarlett had an understanding that they would be deciding whether or not to keep the part in the film in the editing room.
In the end, it was determined that the segment, which was shot in black and white, and had absolutely no tie-in with the rest of the film, would have to be eliminated to avoid screwing up the entire movie. Emmanuel said,
The story did not specifically involve an interpersonal relationship, and it was conceptualized to be filmed in black and white — both of which were extreme departures from the other films.
And after months of editing . . . I had to admit that there were editorial decisions to be made in the interest of serving the overall narrative and composition that resulted in previously filmed scenes and footage not getting used.
Although the segment won’t appear in the actual movie itself, it will be included on the DVD, alongside a segment shot by Russian director, Andrei Zvyagintsev which was also cut from the film.
