Angelina Jolie Helps School In Afghanistan

angelina_jolie

A new primary school built with a $75,000 donation from Angelina Jolie has just opened in Tangi, Afghanistan.

Angelina donated the money about a year and a half ago, after making an emotional visit to the refugee settlement. The eight-classroom school will accommodate roughly 800 girls, whose parents are concerned about schooling them with boys for cultural and security reasons.

UNHCR, UNICEF, and local education authorities are currently working together to recruit teachers and buy textbooks for the students. They are also making plans to accommodate secondary school students at the same school in the future.

Sean Penn Saves Two Haitians

sean_penn

Sean Penn personally saved the lives of a woman and an orphaned child while working to help earthquake victims in Haiti yesterday.

The actor reportedly found the pair trapped in a collapsed building following an aftershock. He worked to free them from the building, and then drove them to the University of Miami hospital camp in Port-au-Prince for treatment. He then took them back to his home because they had nowhere else to go.

Sean plans to stay in Haiti with his 19-year-old daughter Dylan for a while to help the injured and displaced people. He told reporters today that he’s considering pulling out of the Three Stooges movie because he’s “not in a very funny state of mind right now”.

Nicole Richie And Joel Madden Open New Playground

nicole_richie

Nicole Richie and Joel Madden officially launched their new $35,000 playground for kids in a low-income housing project in L.A. yesterday. The money for the playground was raised through the couple’s Richie-Madden Children’s Foundation.

Joel spoke about his family’s involvement with the foundation recently, saying,

It’s become just a very big part of our life. It’s something that we expect of ourselves and of our family… And I think it’s important that our kids grow up around something. Some families have a family business… We wanted to have a foundation that they’re responsible for, that they have to be a part of - that they’ll grow up with and it will just be something that they do, just like anything else that’s expected of them, because that’s what we do. That was the whole idea of it.

Polo Pony Dumps Prince Harry

Prince Harry fell off of a pony while playing polo to raise money for the Sentebale children’s charity in Barbados over the weekend. After the fall, Harry told reporters that neither he nor the horse were seriously injured:

I’m a bit sore but it was all for a good cause so it was worthwhile in the end. Basically the horse slipped from underneath me, which does happen occasionally and is a but unfortunate.

It probably looks very dramatic because I was trying to throw myself clear of the horse. I’m a bit sore but the horse is ok though.

Harry went on to explain that he was initially angry because he was afraid that his fall had cost the children’s charity a $100,000 donation. He said,

The reason why I was throwing my mallet down was because I met this nice businessman at dinner last night who offered me $50,000 for Sentebale if I fell off my horse today. His wife turned round and said ‘that’s a bit harsh, you should give him $100,000 if he stays on.’ And he agreed to seal the deal on that.

So when I fell off, I threw down my mallet and shouted: “What a waste of $100,000!” I was furious with myself. Fortunately this extremely generous gentleman has already been in touch and told us that it was the clear that the horse fell over, rather than I fell off it, so he was happy to honour the $100,000. What a star!

The Sentebale children’s charity was co-founded by Harry in memory of his mother, the late Princess Diana. Donations to the charity help to support AIDS orphans in Lesotho.
