Robert Halderman, who allegedly tried to sextort $2 million from David Letterman last year, has just pleaded guilty to one count of attempted grand larceny in the second degree.
He was sentenced to 6 months in prison, 5 years on probation, and will also be required to perform 1,000 hours of community service.
During his sentencing, Robert apologized to David and one of David’s former mistresses, (and his former girlfriend) Stephanie Birkitt, who he reportedly got most of his information from.
A Supreme Court judge denied David Letterman’s alleged extortionist’s request today to have his case tossed out in court.
Robert “Joe” Halderman is accused of trying to extort $2 million from David by allegedly threatening to go public with a string of affairs that David had with his co-workers. Joe insisted in court that he was simply trying to sell David a screenplay about his life. He’s facing up to 15 years in prison if convicted.

Robert “Joe” Halderman, that guy who tried to extort $2 million from David Letterman, has pulled in around $50,000 in donations from friends and co-workers to help him foot his $200,000 legal bill.
Sources say that Joe’s friends and colleagues believe that he’s innocent.
In related news, Joe’s lawyer Gerald Shargel filed papers in court today, asking for the judge to dismiss the entire case. Here’s Gerald’s written legal statement:
The sensationalism surrounding this indictment, fueled by the celebrity of the purported victim and the deference paid to that celebrity by the District Attorney’s Office, has swallowed the only pertinent issue.
Gerald added that Joe was doing the women at David’s workplace a favor by exposing the “environment of workplace sexual misconduct” that he was creating. He was simply trying to making a “pure commercial transaction” with the information that he had.
Nell Scovell, a former female David Letterman employee who didn’t have sex with the Late Night host, wrote a scathing article for Vanity Fair - published today, about her experience as the only female staffer in the office who wasn’t a slut.
In the article, she revealed that she worked for David for only a few months, and quit after she realized that behind the scenes, the entire show was nothing more than a giant workplace orgy. Pretty much all of the women who weren’t sleeping with David were sleeping with other execs, and when she refused to perform any special favors for the higher ups, she was made to feel “demeaned”.
When she quit, she supposedly made an excuse about missing L.A., and never revealed her real reason for leaving. According to her, she’s coming clean now to try to push for more gender equality in the workplace. Full article here.
According to TMZ, David Letterman’s former mistress/assistant/personal attorney Stephanie Birkitt was been banned from the CBS Late Show set after that pesky Letterman scandal surfaced last week.
In case you need a refresher, this entire thing was pretty much Stephanie’s fault. She cheated on her ex-boyfriend Robert Halderman with David, and then moved out of Robert’s house. A very bitter (and broke) Robert then attempted to extort $2 million from David, threatening to release those dirty sex secrets to the media. Robert is now in jail, and David’s life is now entirely ruined.
David Letterman made a few jokes, and attempted a sincere apology to his wife and staff on his show last night.
After all that, he also made the point to stress his opinion that the evil blackmailer pretty much made him the actual victim in this case.
David Letterman’s former girlfriends are starting to line up for their 15 minutes. The latest slut to come forward is former NYU student and David Letterman intern Holly Hester, who claimed over the weekend that David took her out on a few secret dates back in the 90’s. She told TMZ,
I was madly in love with him at the time. I would have married him. He was hilarious.
She didn’t marry him however, Dave dumped her about a year later because she was just too young for him.

He’s now being held on $200,000 bond.
Update: Robert has just been released after posting bail. Before letting him go, the judge in the case issued a temporary restraining order, requiring Robert to stay away from Dave. No word yet on when he’ll be required to return to court.

- David ended things with Stephanie in 2003 right before his son was born.

David Letterman revealed on his show tonight that someone had recently tried to extort $2 million from him by threatening to go public with a list of female coworkers that he had slept with.
Instead of sending in the cash, David went to the Manhattan D.A’s office with the evidence, and then sent a fake $2 million check to the man on the advice of investigators. The extortionist, 51-year-old Robert Halderman, was arrested earlier today.
During David’s testimony in court this morning, he admitted to having affairs with the employees on the Halderman’s list. No word yet on when the affairs occurred. David is now married to his longtime girlfriend, Regina Lasko.
Update: According to TMZ, Halderman is a resident of Norwalk, CT (about an hour outside of NYC). He was arrested from his workplace at the CBS “48 Hours” offices in Manhattan this morning.
