Michelle Williams recently sat down with Vogue magazine to give her first interview about the death of her daughter Matilda’s father Heath Ledger. Here are just a few interesting quotes from the article:

On dealing with Heath’s death: “I have been severely accident-prone over the past twelve months. I fell downstairs, broke a toe, put my fingers in a blender—seriously distracted. [I would] cry, nap, sit and stare, try to figure out what to make [Matilda] for dinner, talk to friends on the phone. I was holding it together by a string and a paper clip in the fall and winter. I didn’t know if I could keep it all together.”

On friends who helped her grieve:
“Friends never really left me alone… Women and kids really got us through the winter. One got me gardening in the spring, and that’s when it started to turn around. I think it’s something about being in nature that made it more possible. I remember being on my hands and knees. The ground was cold and muddy. I pushed back the dead leaves and saw the bright green shoots of spring. Under all this decay something was growing. Caring for the garden reminded me to care for myself.”

On getting through the death with Matilda: “You console yourself by saying it’s all a deepening process. But it’s weird. After the first year, the pain is less intense; it’s less immediate. But the magical thinking goes away, too. And that’s a whole new reckoning. But every time I really miss him and wonder where he’s gone, I just look at her.”

On talking to Matilda about the paparazzi: “[I tell her] ‘it’s because people really loved your daddy that they want to take your picture, to know you’re all right’. My reaction to it is going to be her reaction to it. It’s an OK model for her to see that her mom has boundaries. It’s OK for me to be upset and to raise my voice. But it’s an ongoing struggle. It’s hard to be the man and the woman in that [paparazzi] situation. Heath always used to do that for us.”

On breaking up with Spike Jonze: “The timing was impossible. I thought falling in love again was the only thing that was going to save me from the pain. This erroneous idea: it just makes things more complicated.”

On her current relationship with Matilda: “I’m falling more and more in love with her, and I think she deserves the bulk of my attention. We’re lucky. I can work. She can go to a good school. There’s a lot there for her. And she can know her dad in so many ways, and so many of his friends who will be able to tell her so many stories. His friends, his family—they were a big part of his life, and they will be a big part of her life.”

Michelle is now splitting her time between Brooklyn and update New York where she goes to get away with Matilda.

Heath Ledger’s Modest Mouse Video

Heath Ledger’s last project before his death was the music video for Modest Mouse’s King Rat.

He died before he was able to finish the video, so his friends at The Masses completed the project for him.

The video was meant to draw attention to the problem of modern whaling practices. Proceeds from iTunes downloads of the video this month will go to benefit the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society. You can read more about the organization here.

Looks like Michelle Williams is taking Spike Jonze’s daddy training to another level.  The director was spotted out on a solo breakfast date with Michelle and the late Heath Ledger’s 3-year-old daughter Matilda last week.  Spike was then publicly seen out and about with the mom and kid this Easter weekend.

We’re now hearing that Spike is taking Michelle and Matilda into his house to live with him in the very near future.  Now that’s an awful lot of baggage.

Spike Jonze Takes Over For Heath Ledger

With Heath Ledger gone for over a year, it seems that Spike Jonze and Michelle Williams thought it was finally safe to fill that vacant daddy role.

Heath and Michelle’s 3-year-old daughter Matilda was spotted out for a little one-on-one breakfast date at Isabella’s in the Upper West Side with Michelle’s new boyfriend Spike.  Michelle kept her distance, and only showed to pick Matilda up after the kid had finished her scrambled eggs.

Do you like scrambled eggs?

Matilda Ledger Gets Rich

Heath Ledger’s insurer has finally agreed to pay out a settlement to his daughter Matilda, after previously denying compensation.  Heath’s douchebag insurance company ReliaStar originally ruled his death a suicide, voiding his $10 million life insurance policy.  The coroner’s report listed the cause of death as an accidental prescription drug overdose.

The final settlement amount is being kept under wraps, but both sides are reportedly pleased with the outcome.

One Year Later: Friends Remember Heath Ledger

Next Thursday will mark the one year anniversary of Heath Ledger’s death, and Entertainment Weekly has put together a fitting tribute for the fallen star, where Heath’s friends and co-workers highlight their experiences with him.  Below are some excerpts from the article.

Gil Junger, director, 10 Things: Heath came in to read, and he exuded a sexuality so uncommon for a man of that age. As soon as he left, I stood up and said, ”Ladies, I have never wanted to sleep with a man, but if I had to, that would be the man. Please hire him immediately.”

Terry Gilliam, director, The Brothers Grimm: [Cinematographer] Nicola Pecorini was working on The Order, and he called me and said, ”This kid is extraordinary. He’s fearless.” I went out to L.A. and met Heath and just liked him immediately. As we were talking, he was constantly jiggling around. I was like, ”That’s great — you’ve got to keep that.” He just had this incredible energy that was intense but very vulnerable at the same time. Heath was determined to be his own man, despite his success. Johnny Depp was someone he really admired. I introduced them at the Toronto Film Festival. Johnny has a good sense of competition. Right from the start, he was just, like, ”Ooh, this guy — watch out!”

Todd Black, producer, A Knight’s Tale: Heath was the pied piper. If you were sad, he took care of you. If you were happy, he made you happier just by dancing or talking or laughing. Fear didn’t enter his psyche. He would say whatever was on his mind. If he didn’t like you, you would know it, and if he liked you, you would know it.

Nicola Pecorini, friend and cinematographer, The Order and Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus: Heath would sometimes ask for help to escape: ”Can you call me at 5:15 so I can pick up the phone and get off this interview?” It was very funny, because he was like a big kid — you know, ”Get me out of Science 101.” He went along for the ride, but at times it was a bit too much for him. He’d call me and say, ”Can I come play with your kid?” My son at the time was 10, and Heath would come and spend hours playing soldiers with him, just to get away from everything.

Emma Thomas, producer, The Dark Knight: The minute Heath started doing make-up and wardrobe tests, we realized it was going to be something really special. I remember doing a fitting where he put on that pink nurse’s dress and he had the Joker’s socks on and it changed the way he moved completely. Right from the beginning, people were talking about this as an Oscar-worthy performance.

Charles Roven, producer, The Dark Knight and Brothers Grimm: I showed Heath the first six minutes of The Dark Knight, the bank heist sequence, on an IMAX screen in London. I said, ”You have to see this. You haven’t seen yourself be the Joker!” He watched it, and it just blew his mind. He was so thrilled, he was just laughing. He said, ”I want to see it again!” It’s not an easy thing to rethread an IMAX, so it took about 15 minutes but we showed it to him again. That was the last time I saw him.

Terry Gilliam: He was obsessed with his daughter. She became the center of his thoughts. He would drag her up to my house in London. Here’s Heath, Academy Award nominee, and he’d just grab his daughter, stick her in a backpack, hop on the Tube, and come up to the house. Nobody would have thought, There’s Heath Ledger. He was just a guy with a kid.

Steve Alexander, his CAA Agent: We were making these incredible plans about what was next, career-wise. The day after he died, he was going to meet Steven Spielberg to explore the idea of playing Tom Hayden in a movie about the Chicago 7. This wasn’t a guy who was even for a second thinking about checking out in any way, shape, or form. There’s a moment in The Dark Knight when Heath’s hanging upside down and he says to Batman, ”You and I are destined to do this forever.” It’s a very sad moment. A sequel certainly would have happened. I cringe when I read that he was a tortured soul or a Method actor who couldn’t get out of his own way because he’d played this dark character. It’s just not true.

Nicola Pecorini: He was so solid into keeping clean, it was quite stunning. I really think he died of a broken heart. I know it can sound very romantic, but it’s very tragic. I think that’s what killed him.

Terry Gilliam: We’re cutting Parnassus now, so it’s like I work with Heath every day. He’s in fine shape, at least in the world I’m inhabiting at the moment. It just doesn’t make sense. Every day goes by and I think, He’ll be back in a second.

Nobody Wants To Live With A Ghost

The owner of Heath Ledger’s old apartment (where he died) has temporarily pulled the rental property off the market after he was unable to find any takers for the luxury NYC home.

The owner was asking for a staggering $26,000 per month for rent on the apartment which has been on the rental market since July of this year.

Apparently no one is too excited about paying big bucks to kick it with The Joker’s ghost.

Michelle Williams Life Sucks

Michelle Williams appears in the latest issue of Newsweek Magazine where she talks about Heath Ledger’s death. She says,

It’s so sad. I just wake up each day in a slightly different place. Grief is like a moving river. It’s just that the more time that passes, the more you miss someone. In some ways it gets worse.

She also talks about how much she hates all that paparazzi attention.

It burns a fire inside of me, the s*** that I’ve seen people do to get at me or my daughter. I don’t want my daughter growing up feeling spied on or threatened.

Heath Ledger’s Life Insurance Company Sucks

We recently reported that Matilda Ledger was set to inherit her father Heath’s entire estate. Now we hear that Matilda was also supposed to receive $10 million in Heath’s life insurance payout, but the insurance company, ReliaStar is refusing to release the money because they are claiming that the death might have been a suicide.

Heath’s death was ruled an accident by the medical examiner several months ago, and Matilda’s lawyers have now brought on a lawsuit against the company to try to recover the money.

Rent Heath Ledger’s Apartment

Apparently, the apartment where Heath Ledger died is now up for rent, at a mere $25,000/month, $3,000 more than Heath paid before his death.  Cashing in, are we?

That’s cool I guess, you know, if you’re into The Joker’s ghost joining you for your midnight snack and all.

Mary-Kate Olsen Subpoenaed

Mary-Kate must be freaking out. OK! Magazine is reporting that the Olsen twin has been subpoenaed to appear before a Federal Grand Jury on April 23rd to answer questions about Heath Ledger’s death.

We had previously reported that Mary-Kate had been refusing to speak to the Feds without a deal in place to avoid prosecution.

Hey MK, better finish flushing that evidence, quick.

Update: MK’s lawyer Michael Miller has just released this statement,

Despite tabloid speculation, Mary-Kate Olsen had nothing whatsoever to do with the drugs found in Heath Ledger’s home or his body, and she does not know where he obtained them…Regarding the government’s investigation, at Ms. Olsen’s request, we have provided the government with relevant information including facts in the chronology of events surrounding Mr. Ledger’s death and the fact that Ms. Olsen does not know the source of the drugs Mr. Ledger consumed,” the statement from her attorney continues…We don’t know the source of the information being quoted in the media regarding the government’s inquiry, but these descriptions are incomplete and inaccurate.

Suurrre…

The New York Post is reporting that unless she receives immunity from prosecution, Mary-Kate Olson is refusing to be interviewed by the FBI about the death of her friend Heath Ledger.

Sources say that Olsen’s lawyer Michael Miller has been working hard to keep the feds away, and officials could end up getting a grand-jury subpoena to force MK to tell them what she knows.

Apparently, a number of people connected to Ledger have been interviewed, and Olsen is the only one refusing to help.

Sources say Olsen’s refusal to speak could somehow be connected to the OxyContin, which was the only drug at the scene of Ledger’s death that was not obtained from a physician. A source says,

[Investigators] are trying to ID the source of the OxyContin. Did it come from a dealer, from a friend? If he had a bottle from a friend, was it taken by someone else before police responded? That is what is trying to be determined.

Looks like someone might be in trouble…
